Two States, One Day Trip, Zero Stress.

Cross from Queensland into New South Wales and you're not just changing states, for half the year, you're changing time zones too. The border monument on Boundary Street is just 10 minutes from the Gold Coast Airport - have one foot in Coolangatta, one foot in Tweed Heads, and, come daylight saving, an hour's difference between your feet. It's the kind of quirky first stop you can only really add to the itinerary if you've got a hire car, the perfect kick-off to your adventure south. 

Public transport across the border is patchy at best, and a tour group will lock you into someone else's stops and someone else's pace. With your own wheels, you can chase good coffee in Kingscliff, get lost in Murwillumbah for an hour longer than planned, and still make it to Byron in time for the lighthouse walk before the crowds arrive.

The first stop, and honestly, the hardest to leave: Fingal Lighthouse, Kingscliff, Casuarina and Cabarita Beach are 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and they're the beaches locals actually go to when they want a break from the Gold Coast's crowds. Clean stretches of sand, no high-rise in sight, and coffee that holds its own against anything back home. This is the kind of place worth building slack into your itinerary for, because you won't want to leave after twenty minutes. 

Inland a little, Murwillumbah's built a name as the Tweed's creative hub. The M|Arts Precinct and Tweed Regional Gallery are worth the detour if you want a change of pace from beach towns, with Wollumbin (Mount Warning) framing the whole drive.

Most people driving south skip straight past Murwillumbah on the way to Byron. Don't be most people. Duck inland and you'll find the Tweed's creative hub: the M|Arts Precinct and Tweed Regional Gallery, home to the Margaret Olley Art Centre's recreated studio, with Wollumbin (Mount Warning) framing the entire experience. It's the difference between a road trip that just hits the highlights and one that actually feels like you found something.

About an hour south of the airport, Byron Bay needs no introduction, but it does need a plan: get there early. The lighthouse walk, the laneways of shops, and some of the best food on the east coast, none of it’s a secret so it gets busy quickly. Early start, first pick of parking, first pick of the view from the lighthouse before the crowds show up.

The Tweed Coast towns and Murwillumbah pair easily into a relaxed half-day if Byron's not the priority. If Byron is the priority, treat it as the main event and leave the rest as bonus stops on the way home. Either way, this only works because you've got a car: your own timing, your own stops, and the freedom to change the plan the second you spot something better than what was on it.
